Chasing Waterfalls on Camiguin Island

Camguin in the Philippines is known as the “Island Born of Fire” because of its towering volcanic peaks and active craters. More than just volcanoes, Camiguin is home to some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Philippines.

With a rugged, mountainous interior covered in lush vegetation, Camiguin is the perfect place to find waterfalls. We went to the island in search of them and visited two of the most spectacular waterfalls we’ve ever seen.

Let me add that we recently returned from Bali, famous for its waterfalls. And Bali waterfalls are certainly a sight to behold. But in my honest opinion, they are not nearly as dramatic as the ones found on Camiguin Island.

Katibawasan Falls

Katibawasan Falls is, without a doubt, the best on Camiguin Island. It’s a long drop from a height of 70 meters and the water hurtles down the side of a rugged, lush cliff face covered with vegetation. It’s hidden away in the jungle, on the slopes of the largest volcano on the island, Mount Hibok-Hibok, and it’s a humbling sight to behold. It easily surpasses any and every waterfall we saw while visiting Bali.

Tuasan Falls

Tuasan is the next best waterfall on Camiguin Island, although many locals we met disagreed with us and held that it is, in fact, the best. Perhaps it’s the sheer volume of water pouring down? Or maybe it’s the drumming sound the water makes as it thunders into the pool at the bottom of the crevasse? Tuasan isn’t as tall as its nearby neighbor, Katibawasan, but it does not disappoint. And it’s also located in an equally dramatic setting - the heart of the jungle.
